NY Times Capsule Review of the Rachel Cusk novel Outline |
The novel Outline by Rachel Cusk was published by Faber and Faber (@FaberBooks) in 2014. Despite glowing reviews (such as this one by the NY Times Heidi Julavits, which called the writing "lethally intelligent") and the -- for this reviewer -- apt title, the notion of "outline" is traced fall too faintly to justify a serious measure of its toxicity. Unfortunate. The title as well as the ambitious narrative technique, had such promise.
Perhaps a version of the author's own outline should have appeared on the back cover, or since it was originally serialized in the Paris Review (@ParisReview), the novel could easily have been presented with some version of Outline's outline there. It remains for some hapless reviewer to take up the cause.
